I believe it took me over 20 shows before I finally saw my first Stagger Lee. No matter which shows I went to, I always just missed it. I went to 4 MSG shows in 1988 and of course they played it 2 of the nights I was not there. I finally caught it at the Spectrum in 1989, and then saw Stagger Lee at 2 of the next 3 shows I went to. My favorite version are as follows:

If you like the slower versions, 10-27-79 is nice, although Bobby's slide playing almost ruined the song. In fact, I believe Garcia tells Blair Jackson that he stopped playing Stagger Lee because of Bobby!

if memory serves, i was there for all three with my sister and a few other friends. i cannot BELIEVE that was almost 20 years ago!! holy crap how time keeps on truckin. i havent seen any of the people i was with there for over 10 years (well, other than my wackjob sister, of course)
always like hangin in that little "park/square" outside the spectrum where the cops basically left everybody be (as long as you stayed within those confines). a veritable little garden of "weeden" :)

Second that SPAC 6/27/85 recommendation...always been my favorite, especially since I was there.
Don't miss the intro which includes practically the whole band yelling at a guy to stop hanging from the balcony so they can get on with the show! (Great Supplication Jam and Crazy fingers from that show as well....one of the best shows from a fairly weak year.)
